Renaissance Venice is elevated. It stands above us as a pinnacle of creation and creativity. It represents rebirth, renewal, and reverence to the nature of Man and God and Art. In spirit, Renaissance Venice is above us, but what we don't recognize is its physical elevation. Venice is sinking. The Venice of Duhrer, Lotto, and Vivarini was about 16 inches higher than it is today. Perhaps one day, hundreds of thousands of years from now, Venice will be gone, slipped slowly beneath the waves of the Adriatic, joining the ranks of Vineta and Atlantis.
